The Top 5 Reasons to Pass Earned Sick Leave Legislation in California
As we reported in a recent issue brief, California is in a strong position to pass legislation allowing working residents to earn up to three paid sick days a year. The bill, titled the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014 (AB 1522), affirms a very basic idea: no worker in California should lose their income or even their job because of an illness they can’t avoid.
More than five million workers in the state currently lack the ability to earn paid sick days, and if they or a family member falls ill, they’re forced into a terrible dilemma: stay home to recover and risk losing wages or their job; or go to work sick, potentially spreading that illness to coworkers or customers.
The recent passage of AB 1522 out of the Assembly is a step in the right direction for the millions of employees without sick time.
This bill offers several important benefits to all Californians, including enhanced coverage for those who already have earned sick leave. Read (and share!) the top five reasons for passing AB 1522 here:
As this brief summary makes clear, AB 1522 not only affords more than five million workers new access to earned sick leave, but it will make the current sick leave policies in workplaces across the state stronger in the process.
